**Chennai, India -** In a move aimed at inspiring young Indians and promoting the nation’s maritime sector, India’s Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) has appointed double Olympic medalist Manu Bhaker as its brand ambassador.

The announcement was made on Tuesday by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, who praised Bhaker’s achievements and the inspirational story of her journey as the daughter of a marine engineer. Sonowal highlighted that Bhaker’s role as brand ambassador would showcase the promising opportunities within the maritime sector and encourage young people to contribute to India’s goal of achieving self-reliance by 2047.

“It is a moment of great pride for every Indian,” Sonowal said, emphasizing that Bhaker would be a strong advocate for the growth of the maritime sector.

The announcement was made alongside a celebration of women’s achievements in various fields, recognizing the contributions of women who have played pivotal roles in nation-building. Among the honored women were: Lt Commander Vartika Joshi, the first woman skipper of the Indian crew of INSV Tarini; Sonali Banerjee, the first female marine engineer in the history of Indian Mercantile Marine; Captain Teena Joey, General Manager of JM Baxi Group; Thulasimathi Murugesan, a silver medalist in singles badminton at the Paris Paralympics; Manisha Ramadass, a bronze medalist in singles badminton; and Rupali Raj Joshi, a surveyor at 1 STS Marine Components.

The event, organized by the Chennai Port Authority in collaboration with the Kamarajar Port Authority, served as a platform to recognize the contributions of women and to highlight the importance of diversity and inclusivity in achieving national aspirations.
