Wed Sep 18 16:13:59 UTC 2024: ## Quebec Experiences Unusually Quiet Tornado Season
Quebec has experienced an unusually quiet tornado season in 2024, with only 11 tornadoes reported throughout the year, a stark contrast to recent years which saw significantly higher numbers.
The last reported tornado in the province occurred on July 24th, with August and most of September remaining completely tornado-free. This potential lull, if it continues, would mark the first time since 2014 that no tornado has formed in Quebec during August or later.
While the total number of tornadoes recorded this year still sits above the province’s yearly average of 10, it pales in comparison to the active years of 2017, 2018, and 2022, which saw 33, 31, and 26 tornadoes respectively. The increased activity in those years coincided with the launch of the Northern Tornadoes Project (NTP) in 2017, which utilizes new tools to report every tornado that occurs.
This quiet season is a stark contrast to the busy tornado season in Ontario, which has recorded 28 tornadoes this year, exceeding the annual average of 18.
The majority of Quebec’s tornadoes this year occurred within a few days, with the first tornado reported on May 27th, causing damage near the Ontario border. The following two days saw a total of 10 tornadoes – six on June 13th and four on July 24th. Only one other tornado hit the region this year, on July 17th.
While the summer season is nearing its end, the possibility of severe thunderstorms and even tornadoes in the fall remains, although it becomes increasingly less likely as the weather cools.
