Apple has pulled the official release of iPadOS 18 after reports surfaced that the update bricked M4 iPad Pros. Users reported that their devices were unable to turn back on after installing the update, leaving them with unusable tablets.
While the issue appears to be isolated to M4 iPad Pros, it has caused significant concern amongst users. Even those with Apple Care are reportedly being told they need to send their devices to Apple engineers for repair before receiving a replacement.
The situation is particularly frustrating as the update included highly anticipated features like a redesigned Photos app, new options for Messages, and a hidden apps feature, but did not include any of the new AI features from Apple Intelligence.
Apple Intelligence, a new AI feature designed to enhance various Apple products, has been plagued by issues and is still in development. While some features are expected to arrive in iOS 18.1, others won’t be available until the fall or even next year.
While the cause of the M4 iPad Pro bricking issue remains unclear, it’s puzzling how the update passed through the public beta testing phase without encountering this problem.
Apple has not yet issued a statement regarding the issue, but users are advised to avoid installing iPadOS 18 on their M4 iPad Pros until further notice.
