**Kolkata, India** – The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has accused the Kolkata Police of delaying the seizure of evidence in the high-profile RG Kar hospital rape-murder case. The CBI claims that Tala police failed to seize the clothes of prime suspect Sanjay Roy for two days after his involvement became apparent, despite CCTV footage showing him entering the seminar hall where the trainee doctor was raped and murdered. This delay, according to the CBI, could have significantly compromised potential evidence against Roy.
Further, the CBI has arrested Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar hospital, and Abhijit Mondal, the station in-charge at Tala Police, for allegedly tampering with evidence. Both officers are said to have been evasive during questioning, leading to suspicions of malicious intent.
The CBI is currently investigating a possible criminal conspiracy involving Roy, Ghosh, and Mondal. The agency plans to examine all phone calls between Ghosh and Mondal, and confront them with CCTV footage from both the police station and the hospital. CBI officials allege that Ghosh was deliberately absent from the crime scene and that both he and Mondal ensured a hasty cremation of the victim’s body, despite her family’s request for a second autopsy.
The Supreme Court has expressed serious concern over the CBI’s findings, raising questions about the West Bengal government’s decision to hire contractual employees for hospital security instead of deploying police officers. While the court refrained from disclosing further details to avoid compromising the investigation, the case has highlighted a potential systemic failure in ensuring safety within government hospitals.
