Wed Sep 18 01:21:35 UTC 2024: ## Tennis Legend Billie Jean King to Receive Congressional Gold Medal

**WASHINGTON** – Tennis icon Billie Jean King is set to receive the prestigious Congressional Gold Medal, becoming the first individual women’s athlete to be so honored. The bipartisan legislation, championed by Reps. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA) and Mikie Sherrill (D-NJ), passed the House of Representatives on Tuesday and will now be sent to President Joe Biden for his signature.

The bill, which garnered unanimous support in the Senate, recognizes King’s remarkable career both on and off the court. Her achievements as a tennis Hall of Famer and her tireless advocacy for gender equality have left an indelible mark on the world.

“Billie Jean King’s lifetime of advocacy and hard work changed the landscape for women and girls on the court, in the classroom, and the workplace,” stated Rep. Sherrill.

The legislation was introduced in September 2023, marking the 50th anniversary of King’s historic victory over Bobby Riggs in the “Battle of the Sexes” – a match that remains the most watched tennis event in history.

The Congressional Gold Medal, awarded by Congress for exceptional contributions to society, has previously been bestowed upon notable athletes such as Jackie Robinson, Roberto Clemente, Jack Nicklaus, Byron Nelson, and Arnold Palmer.

While King previously received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009, this latest honor further solidifies her status as a true American legend. Rep. Fitzpatrick noted that King has “broken barriers, led uncharted paths, and inspired countless people to stand proudly with courage and conviction in the fight for what is right.”
