**Atlanta, GA -** Michelle Malone, a renowned Southern rock and Americana guitarist, has revealed how she played a crucial role in the early career of John Mayer. In a recent interview with Guitar World, Malone recounts how Mayer, then an aspiring musician, would frequent her gigs in Atlanta, begging to sit in. Impressed by his talent, Malone allowed him to join her on stage and even featured him on her 1999 album “Homegrown”.
“He was goofy, gawky, and really tasty,” Malone remembers. “He played with me a lot live and on my record. I took him on the road with me, and he would steal the show every night.”
Just two years later, Mayer released his debut solo album, “Room for Squares,” which propelled him to stardom. Malone, however, remained a beloved figure in the Southern rock scene, continuing to release albums and tour extensively.
Malone credits Atlanta’s diverse music scene with shaping her musical journey. “I used to sneak into this little club called Hedgen’s to see the Georgia Satellites when I was a teen; it really changed my life,” she says. “I didn’t know local bands could rock like the Stones!”
Now, Malone is set to release her latest album, “Southern Comfort,” on October 4th. The Americana-flavored record, co-written with Dean Dillon, is set to showcase her signature Southern rock sound.
While Mayer has gone on to achieve global recognition, Malone remains a respected figure in the music industry, known for her powerful voice and electrifying guitar playing. Her story serves as a reminder that even the biggest stars often have humble beginnings, and that mentorship can play a vital role in shaping a musician’s career.
