Wed Sep 18 03:10:26 UTC 2024: ## Jeremy Dutcher Makes History, Winning Second Polaris Music Prize

**Toronto, Canada** – Indigenous singer and classical composer Jeremy Dutcher has made history by winning the 2023 Polaris Music Prize for his album “Motewolonuwok,” marking the first time an artist has won the award twice.

Dutcher, who hails from Fredericton, New Brunswick, previously won the prestigious award in 2018 for his debut album “Wolastoqiyik Lintuwakonawa.” “Motewolonuwok,” released last fall, features Dutcher’s original songs with lyrics in English, a departure from his previous work.

The Polaris Music Prize, awarded annually to the best Canadian album of the year, is chosen by a jury of journalists and broadcasters. Dutcher’s victory was announced at a gala held tonight at Toronto’s Massey Hall.

The $50,000 prize recognizes Dutcher’s continued artistic excellence and the impactful nature of his music, which explores themes of Indigenous identity and cultural preservation.

“Motewolonuwok” triumphed over a shortlist that included albums from artists such as Cindy Lee, the Beaches, Allison Russell, BAMBII, Charlotte Cardin, DijahSB, Elisapie, NOBRO, and TOBi.

Last year’s Polaris Music Prize was awarded to Debby Friday for her album “GOOD LUCK,” and she served as the host of this year’s gala.
