**New York, NY** – Soccer fans in the Big Apple can rejoice as Lionel Messi is confirmed to play against NYCFC at Yankee Stadium on Saturday. However, the legendary Argentine’s playing time remains uncertain, as Inter Miami manager Gerardo Martino is cautious about overexposing the star after a recent ankle injury.
Messi, who only recently returned from a July 14th ankle sprain sustained during the Copa America final, will also feature in Wednesday’s game against Atlanta United. Despite his recent return, Messi played a full 90 minutes in Inter Miami’s last game, a 3-1 victory over the Philadelphia Union, and is considered “fine” by Martino.
“Leo is fine, he ended the game well. Tired, obviously,” Martino stated, acknowledging Messi’s fitness. “It’s the first 90 minutes in a long time, but it ended very well. He is going to travel to both games. He is available but there are three games this week with travel included, so we have to see it day by day.”
This will be Messi’s first MLS match in the New York metropolitan area. He missed the earlier Inter Miami visit to Red Bull Arena earlier this year while on international duty.
NYCFC, having missed the opportunity to host Messi last year, are undoubtedly thrilled at the prospect of welcoming the soccer icon to Yankee Stadium. The anticipation is palpable, with tickets on the secondary market currently priced at $162 on SeatGeek and $130 on Vivid Seats.
Messi’s previous visit to the tri-state area, a match against the Red Bulls last year, saw him enter the game in the 60th minute, much to the delight of the record-setting 26,276 fans. He went on to score a late goal in the 2-0 victory.
While his playing time remains a question mark, Messi’s presence is sure to electrify Yankee Stadium and provide an unforgettable experience for New York soccer fans.
