Wed Sep 18 01:55:24 UTC 2024: ## Instagram Introduces Teen Accounts with Enhanced Parental Controls

In a bid to bolster safety for young users and address growing parental concerns, Instagram has rolled out a new feature called Teen Accounts. This initiative automatically places users under the age of 18 into these accounts, which come with a suite of restrictions aimed at safeguarding teens online.

Teen Accounts will become active within 60 days in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia, with European implementation later this year and worldwide rollout in January 2024.

The new feature offers parents a greater level of control over their children’s online experience. Teen Accounts come with built-in protections including private accounts, messaging restrictions, sensitive content filtering, limited interactions, time limits, and sleep mode.

Parents can also activate parental supervision, granting them visibility into their teen’s conversations and the content they engage with.

For users under 16, parental permission is required for any modifications to these built-in safety features. Instagram is also implementing measures to verify user age and proactively identify accounts where teenagers might be misrepresenting their age.

While some argue that the new feature offers a balanced approach, others, including the Butterfly Foundation, advocate for further measures, such as age verification, algorithm control, and legislative changes.

The rollout of Teen Accounts comes amidst discussions regarding a proposed social media ban in Australia. While the effectiveness and implementation details of the ban remain unclear, the debate highlights the increasing focus on online child safety and the need for platforms to take proactive measures.
