**Srinagar, India** – Indian-administered Kashmir held its first local elections on Wednesday since the region’s special semi-autonomous status was revoked in 2019, a move that sparked widespread anger and protests. The elections are being seen as a test of public sentiment in the disputed territory, which is also claimed by Pakistan.
While many Kashmiris remain bitter about the 2019 decision, which placed the region under direct control from New Delhi, the elections have also been viewed as an opportunity to exercise their democratic rights. Turnout is expected to be high, with many residents hoping to elect representatives who can address their concerns, particularly regarding unemployment and economic hardship.
“Our problems have piled up,” said retired government officer Mukhtar Ahmad Tantray, 65. “The reins of power were handed over to the bureaucracy.”
The elections are being conducted in three phases due to security concerns and logistical challenges in the mountainous region. However, despite the elections, key decisions regarding security and governance will remain in New Delhi’s hands.
“People can go and plead with their local representative,” Tantray said. “Even if they cannot do anything, they can at least raise the issues.”
The elections are taking place amid a 35-year insurgency in the region, which has resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands of civilians, soldiers, and rebels. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have maintained that the changes to Kashmir’s governance have brought a new era of peace and economic growth, but critics accuse the government of imposing restrictions on civil liberties and suppressing dissent.
The elections are seen as a crucial test for the BJP, which is facing criticism over its handling of Kashmir and the economic challenges faced by the region. The outcome of these elections will offer insights into the sentiments of Kashmiris and the political landscape in the disputed territory.
