Thu Sep 19 12:29:26 UTC 2024: ## India’s Ashwin and Jadeja Rescue Hosts on Day 1 of 1st Test Against Bangladesh

**Chennai, India:** A shaky start for India turned into a day of redemption on the first day of the first Test against Bangladesh in Chennai. After losing their top order within the opening hour, India recovered magnificently thanks to a sensational century from Ravichandran Ashwin and an unbeaten 86 from Ravindra Jadeja, ending the day on 339/6.

Bangladesh, riding high after their historic series win against Pakistan, started brightly with Hasan Mahmud wreaking havoc. He claimed the wickets of Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, and Virat Kohli, all within the first 10 overs, leaving India reeling at 33/3.

However, Rishabh Pant and Yashasvi Jaiswal steadied the innings with a 50-run partnership before Pant fell after lunch, leaving India at 88/4.

It was then that Ashwin and Jadeja took charge, stitching together a 195-run stand for the seventh wicket, the highest ever for the hosts against Bangladesh. Ashwin notched his sixth Test century, his second at home and fastest in his career, while Jadeja also approached the triple-figure mark.

The Chepauk pitch offered some early assistance to the seamers, with the overcast Chennai sky providing conducive conditions for swing bowling. However, as the day progressed, the pitch showed signs of grip for the spinners, with Jadeja and Ashwin effectively neutralizing the Bangladesh attack.

This Test series marks the beginning of India’s home campaign for the World Test Championship, with a string of crucial series against New Zealand and Australia lined up. The Indian captain, Rohit Sharma, expressed his confidence in his team’s bowling depth, stating that India has a lot of options to choose from and plans to rotate bowlers throughout the series.

The second day of the Test promises to be exciting as Bangladesh look to make inroads into India’s strong position and stay in the game.
