**Almere, Netherlands** – Indira de Rooij, 25, has faced a lifetime of challenges due to a rare condition called lymphatic malformation, which caused fluid-filled cysts to form on her face. Born with the condition, Indira underwent over 30 surgeries to reduce the malformations, but the risk of facial paralysis forced her to halt treatment during her childhood.
Despite her physical struggles, Indira faced relentless bullying and online harassment. At the tender age of 16, a stranger posted a photo of her on Twitter, comparing her to a monster with a facial disfigurement, garnering over 10,000 likes. “There is never a day when people don’t look at me and laugh at me,” she said.
However, through years of therapy and self-reflection, Indira has found a newfound strength and happiness. “I have semi accepted myself and how I look,” she said. “No matter what I look like people will always be mean, but I have never been happier than I am this year.”
Indira, now a nurse, credits her resilience to her parents who pushed for her to attend mainstream school. “They’ve always said no matter what’s going on outside she has the brains,” she shared.
Despite her condition, Indira lives a fulfilling life. Her malformations do not significantly impact her day-to-day activities, save for not being able to swim and requiring a tracheotomy to breathe. While she continues to search for alternative treatment options, she has accepted that her appearance may never fully align with societal beauty standards.
Indira hopes her story inspires others facing similar challenges. “I think it’s very important to self accept yourself,” she says. “There will always be people who will not accept you. If you have big dreams and you have a disability, it doesn’t mean you can’t do it.”
Her journey is a testament to the power of self-acceptance and the ability to overcome adversity. “No one thought I was going to be working as a nurse or living as I do now,” she said. “But I am.”
