**Nairobi, Kenya** – Opposition leader Raila Odinga’s decision to appoint four former party leaders to President William Ruto’s cabinet has effectively quelled a brewing succession crisis within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM). The move, seen as a strategic maneuver to maintain party unity, has also delayed planned grassroots elections originally scheduled for April.
The four leaders, former deputy party leaders Wycliffe Oparanya and Hassan Joho, ex-chair John Mbadi, and ex-secretary political affairs Opiyo Wandayi, had all been actively vying to succeed Odinga, creating a tense atmosphere within the party.
“Baba [Odinga] allowed the former party officials to join the cabinet to diffuse the building tension in the party as they had all taken hardline positions and this was threatening the stability of the party,” an ODM official from Nyanza, who requested anonymity, told Nation.Africa.
The appointments, coupled with Odinga’s own focus on his bid for the African Union Commission chairmanship, have seen the succession battle take a backseat. However, concerns remain about the lack of transparent leadership selection within the party.
“Leadership succession cannot be sorted through boardroom consensus or trace among leaders. This undermines the democratic principles of governance, transparency and accountability,” noted political analyst Martin Oloo.
The party has now announced plans to hold grassroots elections in November, a move that has been met with skepticism from some observers who believe that elections have been consistently delayed.
Meanwhile, ODM has appointed Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o as acting party leader, citing his experience, loyalty, and lack of political baggage as key factors in the decision.
“His experience and loyalty to the party dates back to 2005 when he played a big role in the formation of the party,” stated Paul Akeyo, ODM Kisumu County Coordinating Committee.
The developments within ODM have raised questions about the party’s commitment to democratic processes and the potential for future conflicts as the 2027 general elections approach.
