Wed Sep 18 03:35:47 UTC 2024: ## Expelled MP Grilled in Court Over Anti-Trans Rally

Melbourne, Australia – The defamation trial between ousted Victorian Liberal MP Moira Deeming and Opposition Leader John Pesutto continues in the Federal Court, with Ms Deeming facing intense questioning over her role in organising an anti-trans-rights rally.

Ms Deeming, who was expelled from the Liberal Party last year, is suing Mr Pesutto for comments he made following the March 2023 “Let Women Speak” rally, which she claims linked her to neo-Nazis.

In court today, Ms Deeming was asked if she was aware of the UK activist Kellie-Jay Keen, who was involved in the rally, sharing a stage with a member of the Proud Boys at a similar event in the US. Ms Deeming denied having knowledge of this connection prior to Mr Pesutto’s statements.

Mr Pesutto’s lawyer, Matt Collins KC, also questioned Ms Deeming about her relationship with Ms Keen and other anti-trans-rights activists involved in the “Let Women Speak” rallies. While acknowledging her close association with Ms Keen, Ms Deeming insisted she was unaware of public allegations regarding Ms Keen’s association with far-right extremists until Mr Pesutto brought them to light.

The court heard Ms Deeming played a significant role in organizing the Melbourne rally, including booking the location, securing a sound system, and expressing concerns about potential security threats. However, Ms Deeming repeatedly claimed she did not remember what she told Mr Pesutto about her involvement in the event.

Mr Collins questioned Ms Deeming’s failure to research the “Let Women Speak” rallies, particularly given her awareness of security concerns. Ms Deeming defended her actions, stating that she saw the rally as a positive movement for women’s rights.

The defamation trial is expected to last three weeks.
