Thu Sep 19 05:27:00 UTC 2024: ## Barnsley Midfielder Makes History as First Sri Lankan Tamil to Play Professional Football in England

**Barnsley, England** – Vimal Yoganathan, a young midfielder for Barnsley FC, has become the first person of Sri Lankan Tamil descent to play professional football in England, making history and inspiring millions.

Yoganathan, who started his football journey at the age of four, joined the Liverpool academy but was released as a schoolboy. Despite the setback, he persevered and found a new home at Barnsley, where he has now etched his name in the record books.

His historic debut came on August 8th, 2023, when he entered the pitch as a substitute in an EFL Cup match against Tranmere Rovers. He further solidified his place in history on September 18th, 2024, when he started in a 7-0 loss against Manchester United in the EFL Cup.

Yoganathan’s achievement is particularly significant given the underrepresentation of South Asian players in English football. Of the roughly 3,700 players in the men’s professional game, only 22 are of South Asian heritage.

“It was a big occasion for them to start. They deserve it,” said Barnsley manager Darrell Clarke. “Vimal Yoganathan is a trailblazer.”

Yoganathan’s journey, from the disappointment of being released by Liverpool to his historic achievement with Barnsley, is a testament to his determination and resilience. He stands as a powerful inspiration for aspiring young footballers, particularly from South Asian backgrounds, proving that anything is possible with hard work and unwavering belief.
