Wed Sep 18 03:08:19 UTC 2024: ## Former Bearcat Star Mardy Gilyard Returns to Cincinnati for Hall of Fame Induction

Cincinnati, OH – Marshwan “Mardy” Gilyard, a legendary University of Cincinnati football player, will be inducted into the James P. Kelly Athletic Hall of Fame this weekend. Gilyard, a receiver who played for the Bearcats from 2005-2009, is credited with helping lead the program to unprecedented success under coaches Brian Kelly and Mark Dantonio.

Gilyard’s journey to stardom was far from conventional. He initially played cornerback but was dismissed from the team in 2006 due to academic issues and financial troubles. Working multiple jobs, including construction, he eventually returned to the team thanks to the support of former assistant coach Tim Hinton. Moved to receiver, Gilyard flourished, leading the Bearcats in receiving yards, all-purpose yards, and kickoff return yards.

His fiery personality and work ethic were legendary, and he ultimately helped guide the Bearcats to the Orange Bowl and Sugar Bowl appearances. Despite a rocky relationship with coach Kelly, Gilyard credits him for recognizing his potential as a receiver.

Gilyard’s career was marked by both highs and lows, including a tumultuous relationship with the coaching staff and a sense of unfinished business. He holds a strong belief that the 2009 team, which went undefeated, was robbed of a national championship due to the playoff system at the time.

Now a high school coach in Massachusetts, Gilyard is eager to return to Cincinnati to connect with fans and share his story. He plans to visit the student section, a place he knows well, and revel in the memories of a successful career.

Gilyard’s induction into the Hall of Fame is a testament to his resilience, talent, and impact on the University of Cincinnati’s football program. His story is a reminder that even the most unlikely of journeys can lead to greatness.
