**KUALA LUMPUR** – The Malaysian music industry mourns the loss of renowned music director and composer Datuk Ooi Eow Jin, who passed away yesterday at Kuala Lumpur Hospital at the age of 86.

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil expressed his condolences to the family, saying, “The local music industry has lost a truly invaluable gem. My condolences to Datin Elaine Khaw and all his family members. His contributions to the development and advancement of the local music industry will be remembered forever.”

Datuk Ooi’s illustrious career spanned decades. He began with the RTM Orchestra in 1963, serving for 20 years before joining TV3. He also shared his knowledge as a lecturer at several private and public universities. Outside of his work in the industry, Datuk Ooi was a skilled solo pianist, performing at a Kuala Lumpur hotel until 2015.

Throughout his career, Datuk Ooi composed numerous songs for both Malaysian and international artists. His work graced the recordings of renowned singers such as the late Datuk Sudirman Arshad, the late Datuk Rafeah Buang, Datuk M Nasir, Rahimah Rahim, Flora Santos, Alleycats, Jennifer Yen and Francis Yip.

Datuk Ooi’s passing marks a significant loss for the Malaysian music scene. His contributions and legacy will continue to inspire generations of musicians to come.
