Pune, India – Anna Sebastian Perayil, a young chartered accountant who joined EY India in Pune just four months ago, has died. Her mother, Anita Augustine, alleges her daughter’s death was due to excessive workload and a toxic work culture at the professional services firm.

In a letter to EY India Chairman Rajiv Memani, Augustine details how her daughter, a top student throughout her academic career, started experiencing anxiety, sleeplessness, and stress shortly after joining EY. Despite showing signs of physical and mental exhaustion, including chest pain, Anna continued to work tirelessly to meet unrealistic expectations, even on her convocation day.

Augustine alleges that EY did not provide support during this period and failed to attend Anna’s funeral or reach out to the family after her death.

While EY has expressed deep sadness over the loss and stated its commitment to providing a healthy work environment, the allegations have sparked outrage within the industry. Several professionals have spoken out, criticizing the alleged toxic culture at EY India and highlighting the dangers of excessive workload and unrealistic expectations.

In response to the allegations, EY has stated that they are taking the family’s concerns “with the utmost seriousness and humility” and will continue to find ways to improve the workplace. The firm also stated that they provided all necessary support to the family during this difficult time.

The incident has brought to light the potential risks of a demanding work environment, raising concerns about employee well-being and the need for organizations to prioritize mental health support for their employees.
