**Washington, D.C.** – As the 2024 US Presidential election approaches, a stark duality is emerging: a more dangerous security landscape alongside a more secure election infrastructure. While government officials acknowledge the heightened threat environment, they assure voters that extensive measures are in place to safeguard the election process.

“We do see a growing and diverse array of foreign adversaries trying to disrupt our elections,” stated Cait Conley, a senior advisor at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), highlighting the increasing complexity of threats. However, she emphasized that “tremendous investment and progress” have been made in securing election infrastructure.

Despite these efforts, threats are increasingly prevalent and varied. The FBI and US Postal Service are investigating suspicious packages sent to election workers in at least 12 states, while CISA officials report a surge in swatting incidents targeting election personnel. Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco revealed a disturbing escalation in threats and acts of violence against public officials, particularly those responsible for conducting elections.

The situation extends beyond election officials, with threats also directed at law enforcement officers, prosecutors, elected officials, and candidates. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas cited the recent assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump and the rash of threats in Springfield, Ohio, as examples of the escalating threat environment.

While the dangers have been acknowledged since at least 2021, the upcoming election, coupled with the actions of foreign adversaries, are fueling discontent and anger, potentially leading to more attacks. Russia and Iran, with China playing a lesser role, are actively engaging in disinformation campaigns, utilizing AI to amplify their efforts.

Experts urge voters to be cautious regarding information sources and to verify information from multiple sources. The National Association of Secretaries of State has launched a social media campaign promoting election officials as trusted sources of election information. CISA continues to work with election officials to prepare for any contingency.

While AI is being used to spread disinformation more effectively, CISA officials emphasize that it does not present a fundamentally new threat. They assert that election officials have taken measures to address this existing threat vector and are equipped to respond accordingly.

The 2024 election will undoubtedly be conducted in a tense and complex security environment.
