Wed Sep 18 02:08:23 UTC 2024: ## Neuralink Aims to Cure Blindness with Brain Chip, But Experts Remain Skeptical

Elon Musk has announced that his brain-computer interface company, Neuralink, has received a “Breakthrough Device” designation from the FDA for its “Blindsight” device, which aims to restore vision to blind individuals.

Musk claims that the technology could even enable those born blind to see for the first time, as long as their visual cortex remains intact. He envisions a future where the device provides vision beyond natural capabilities, allowing users to see in infrared, ultraviolet, or even radar wavelengths, similar to the fictional character Geordi La Forge from Star Trek.

While Musk envisions high-resolution vision in the future, he acknowledges that initial vision will be “low resolution, like Atari graphics.”

The FDA’s Breakthrough Device Program designates devices that offer potentially significant improvements in treating life-threatening or debilitating conditions. However, while tech publications welcome Neuralink’s progress, they emphasize that it’s premature to claim the device can restore sight.

Experts remain cautious about the technology, urging a balanced approach to expectations while acknowledging the potential for groundbreaking advancements in neural technology.
