**CARMEL, IN** – A fire at the Audi dealership on 96th Street over the weekend involving an electric vehicle has raised concerns about the unique challenges firefighters face when battling EV fires. The lithium-ion battery in the car proved particularly difficult to extinguish, requiring firefighters to use hoses to cool it down before it could be moved.
Carmel Fire Department spokesman Tim Griffin explained that the dealership’s sprinkler system, while helpful, wasn’t enough to fully suppress the fire. “These fires burn at a high level of heat and often don’t go out easily,” he said. The fire even reignited several times while being towed from the building.
While the Carmel Fire Department hasn’t seen a significant increase in EV fires, they acknowledge the need for better methods to fight them. “New technology brings new challenges,” Griffin stated. “We’re constantly adapting and overcoming these obstacles.”
The Audi dealership, where the fire occurred, has yet to comment on whether the incident will impact their electric vehicle marketing strategy.
This incident underscores the evolving nature of firefighting in the face of new technologies. As electric vehicles become more prevalent, fire departments across the country are actively researching and developing effective techniques for combating their unique fire hazards.
