**Toronto, Canada** – Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley have revealed the grueling physical and emotional demands of filming “The Substance”, a body horror film directed by Coralie Fargeat.
Moore portrays an Oscar-winning actress who resorts to a black market drug to reclaim her youth and beauty, forcing her to alternate between her current and youthful selves every other week. The film’s striking visuals, including extensive prosthetics and makeup, posed significant challenges for the actors.
“It was always an hour and a half to get off [the prosthetics],” Moore told Entertainment Weekly, “It’s glued, you have to be as careful if not more careful taking it off so you don’t destroy your skin.”
Qualley, who plays Moore’s daughter in the film, echoed the intensity, stating: “All of it. Every goddamned day. Even the dancing [in the workout video portions] was brutal.”
The demanding shoot took its toll, with both actresses confessing to spending their off-time recuperating. “We’d hit the weekends and, both of us, did we go out anywhere? We didn’t do anything,” said Moore. “On rest time, we’d text, I’d go to her apartment… We’d be like, ‘I can’t f—ing move.’ It was difficult.”
Despite the demanding production, “The Substance” has garnered critical acclaim and sparked Oscar buzz for Moore, marking a potential career resurgence after four decades in the industry. The film was met with standing ovations at both the Cannes and Toronto International Film Festivals.
