Wed Sep 18 01:22:02 UTC 2024: ## Chinese Influence Operation Poses as Trump Supporters in US Election

A joint investigation by VOA Mandarin and Taiwanese social media analytics firm Doublethink Lab (DTL) has uncovered a network of ten fake social media accounts on X (formerly Twitter) posing as American Trump supporters. These accounts, dubbed “MAGAflage 1,” are linked to China’s “Spamouflage” network, a state-sponsored operation aimed at supporting the Chinese government and undermining its critics.

The accounts were inactive for a year before becoming active after the first assassination attempt on Donald Trump in July. While they primarily promote pro-Trump content, they occasionally share material praising China’s political and economic model and criticizing the U.S. government.

Experts believe the accounts’ main objective is to generate authentic traffic and engage with American users. However, the accounts have limited influence so far, with only a handful of followers and minimal interactions.

The discovery comes as U.S. intelligence agencies warn of intensified foreign interference efforts in the upcoming presidential election. While Russia remains the primary concern, officials acknowledge China’s ongoing small-scale influence operations on social media.

The Chinese Embassy in Washington denied any involvement in interfering in the US election.

This discovery highlights the growing concern over foreign actors manipulating social media platforms to influence public opinion and interfere in elections.
