**Chandigarh:** A district court in Chandigarh has issued a notice to actor and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut regarding her upcoming film “Emergency”. This comes after a local advocate filed an application claiming the film portrays Sikhs in a negative light and includes false allegations against the community.
Advocate Ravinder Singh Bassi, former president of the District Bar Association, argued that the film’s depiction of Sikhs is inaccurate and seeks to register a case against Ms Ranaut. The court will hear the matter again on December 5th.
“Emergency”, directed and co-produced by Ms Ranaut, has been facing heavy criticism since its announcement. Several Sikh organizations, including the Shiromani Akali Dal, have accused the film of misrepresenting history and portraying the Sikh community in a biased way.
Adding to the controversy, Ms Ranaut recently revealed that she had to sell her Mumbai property after the film’s release was postponed multiple times due to delays in obtaining a censor certificate. The actor, who plays former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in the film, stated that she had invested her personal property in the project and is now facing financial difficulties due to the film’s stalled release.
The political drama, co-produced by Zee Studios and Ms Ranaut’s Manikarnika films, focuses on the Emergency imposed by the Indira Gandhi government in 1975. The film also features Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Vishak Nair, Mahima Chaudhry and Milind Soman.
“Emergency” was initially slated for a release last year, but it was postponed to June and then again to September 6th due to the Lok Sabha elections. However, the film still awaits approval from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), casting uncertainty about its release date.
Earlier this month, Zee Entertainment Enterprises approached the Bombay High Court seeking intervention to clear the film for release but the court refused to grant any urgent relief.
