Thu Sep 19 05:57:48 UTC 2024: ## India Moves Forward with “One Nation, One Election” Plan
**New Delhi, September 19, 2024** – The Indian government has officially accepted the recommendations of a high-level panel advocating for simultaneous elections at all levels of government. This ambitious “One Nation, One Election” plan aims to hold polls for the Lok Sabha, state assemblies, and local bodies in a phased manner, starting with a nationwide consensus-building exercise.
The plan, which has already garnered support from several political parties, is intended to streamline the electoral process and potentially reduce the financial burden associated with frequent elections. While some parties have expressed reservations, the government believes widespread public support will sway them.
Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that an implementation group will be formed to further develop the plan. Extensive discussions will take place across the country over the next few months, culminating in a draft bill to be presented to Parliament.
The panel, headed by former President Ram Nath Kovind, has suggested a two-phased approach. The first phase would involve simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies, followed by local body elections within 100 days.
Implementing the plan will require significant constitutional amendments, most of which will not necessitate ratification by state assemblies. However, some changes, including the creation of a single electoral roll and voter ID card, will require approval from at least half of the states.
Simultaneous elections were last held in India between 1951 and 1967. The government aims to have the “One Nation, One Election” system fully in place by 2029.
