Wed Sep 18 17:26:46 UTC 2024: ## South Africa Humiliated by Afghanistan in ODI Opener

**Sharjah, UAE:** South Africa suffered a humiliating defeat in the first ODI against Afghanistan, bowled out for a paltry 106 in just 34 overs. The Proteas batting performance was characterized by ineptitude, with only Wiaan Mulder offering any resistance, scoring a gritty 52 runs.

The match started disastrously for the South Africans, with their top order crumbling under pressure from the Afghan spinners. Reeza Hendricks was the first to fall, followed by stand-in captain Aiden Markram and Tristan Stubbs. Debutant Jason Smith and Kyle Verryenne were also dismissed cheaply, leaving the team reeling at 36/7 in the powerplay.

Andile Phehlukwayo added to the woes with a careless run out, highlighting the lack of focus and composure within the team.

Despite the dismal batting performance, Afghanistan deserve credit for their disciplined bowling, especially Fazalhaq Farooqi who took 4/37 from seven overs, and Allah Ghazanfar who claimed 3/20 from 10 overs.

Mulder, however, fought valiantly, showcasing his growing confidence with a gritty half-century. He received support from Bjorn Fortuin, who scored 16 runs and took two wickets.

The match was a clear indication of the work that lies ahead for South Africa’s one-day coach Rob Walter. The Proteas will need to address their batting frailties and improve their overall approach if they want to succeed in future tournaments.

The second ODI is scheduled for Friday at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium.
