Wed Sep 18 02:14:22 UTC 2024: ## New Breathalyzer Tech Helps Aussie Farmers Tackle Cattle Methane Emissions

**Sydney, Australia** – Australian farmers are taking a big step towards reducing their environmental impact by using cutting-edge technology to track methane emissions from their cattle. The “breathalyzer” devices, developed by Agscent and Optiweigh, are being deployed on farms across NSW and Queensland, as well as in Kansas, USA.

The devices are designed to lure cows in with molasses, then weigh them and record methane emissions with every breath and burp. Daniela Carnovale from Agscent explains, “Every single breath tells a different story. We can map the breath to give us insights on pregnancy, disease, and methane.”

The technology is crucial as Australia aims to slash methane emissions by 30% by 2030. Agriculture is a major contributor to the country’s greenhouse gas emissions, with livestock responsible for a significant portion.

“It’s exciting if we can improve efficiency and productivity and show a good story for the industry,” says Jon Wright, a farmer from Cowra, NSW, who has implemented the technology on his farm. “We do need to take responsibility for [methane emissions].”

The devices provide real-time data on methane emissions, allowing farmers to identify high-emitting animals and adjust feed plans accordingly. Research also points to potential for breeding cattle with lower methane output.

Professor Luciano Gonzales from the University of Sydney says the technology “has huge potential given it can provide real-time information on how much gases are being emitted.” This data will be crucial in helping farmers make informed decisions about livestock management, breeding, and feed additives to reduce methane emissions.

This initiative is a promising step towards a more sustainable agricultural industry in Australia, showcasing the power of innovation in addressing climate change challenges.
