**WASHINGTON** – Tennis legend and activist Billie Jean King will become the first individual female athlete to receive the prestigious Congressional Gold Medal. The bipartisan legislation honoring King, championed by Representatives Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA) and Mikie Sherrill (D-NJ), passed the House of Representatives on Tuesday and will now be sent to President Biden for his signature. The bill previously received unanimous approval in the Senate.
King’s impact on sports and society is undeniable. She has been a vocal advocate for gender equality, breaking barriers for women both on and off the court. Her historic 1973 victory over Bobby Riggs in the “Battle of the Sexes” remains the most-watched tennis match of all time.
Rep. Sherrill praised King’s “lifetime of advocacy and hard work,” acknowledging her influence on women and girls in sports, education, and the workforce. Rep. Fitzpatrick added that King has “broken barriers, led uncharted paths, and inspired countless people to stand proudly with courage and conviction in the fight for what is right.”
The Congressional Gold Medal, awarded by Congress for distinguished achievements and contributions, has previously recognized athletes such as Jackie Robinson and Roberto Clemente (baseball), and Jack Nicklaus, Byron Nelson, and Arnold Palmer (golf). King previously received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009.
