**SAINT PAUL, Minn.** — In a bold move aimed at increasing transparency and affordability, Bethel University will be slashing its tuition price by nearly half, starting in Fall 2025. The current sticker price of $44,050 will be reduced to $25,990 per year, a significant change that the university says reflects the actual cost of attendance.
Bethel President Ross Allen explained that the current sticker price is inflated by substantial scholarships and discounts, leading to confusion and frustration among potential students and their families. This practice, common across many private universities, often results in students paying significantly less than the advertised price.
“The focus of this change is to really solve the lack of transparency with pricing,” Allen said. “The new net price will be very close to what it was before.”
This decision comes as private universities nationwide grapple with declining enrollment and increasing competition from public institutions. A recent study by the National Association of College and University Business Officers revealed that the average tuition discount at private universities is around 56%, highlighting the disconnect between advertised prices and actual costs.
Chris Wills, a college admissions expert, commended Bethel’s move, calling it a “positive step” towards a more transparent and understandable pricing model. He argues that the old system, built on inflated sticker prices and large scholarships, was not only confusing but also potentially misleading.
“For the average American family, this system is impossible to understand,” Wills said. “What Bethel and others are doing is just being more transparent upfront about what the price actually is.”
Bethel’s decision to lower its advertised price aligns with a growing trend among private universities looking to increase affordability and competitiveness. Experts believe that this shift is crucial for private institutions to remain relevant and attract students in a changing educational landscape.
