Wed Sep 18 01:39:39 UTC 2024: ## Hobart’s Proposed Stadium Moves Closer to Reality with Development Application Lodged

**Hobart, Tasmania** – The proposed Macquarie Point stadium in Hobart has taken a major step forward with the lodging of a development application. The 23,000-seat, roofed stadium, a key requirement for the introduction of the Tasmania Devils into the AFL competition, is expected to be ready for the 2029 season.

Concept images released alongside the application provide a glimpse of the stadium’s visual impact on the Hobart cityscape. While final colors and materials are yet to be determined, the images demonstrate the stadium’s integration into the surrounding environment.

The project, which enjoys support from both the Liberal government and Labor opposition, faces a rigorous assessment process. The Tasmanian Planning Commission will establish an independent panel to evaluate the project’s environmental, economic, social, and cultural impacts. This assessment is expected to take up to 12 months.

Despite the project’s progress, the cost of the stadium has increased. Construction is now estimated to cost $60 million more than initially projected. The Macquarie Point Development Corporation’s application, which includes 269 pages and nearly 4,000 pages of supporting documentation, will need to be approved by both houses of parliament before construction can begin.
