Wed Sep 18 17:09:00 UTC 2024: ## Australia Urged to Step Up Climate Action at UN Summit

**Canberra, Australia:** The Australian government is facing mounting pressure to take a more active role in combating climate change, particularly in the Pacific region, ahead of the upcoming UN Summit for the Future in New York.

The summit, taking place prior to the annual General Assembly, aims to advance global cooperation and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Pacific, heavily impacted by climate change, is calling for urgent action, including a 1.5 degrees Celsius aligned emissions reduction target from Australia.

The Australian Council for International Development (ACFID) argues that Australia, with its high historical emissions and economic size, has a responsibility to act. ACFID recommends that Australia:

* **Contribute at least $100 million to the Loss and Damage Fund**, which helps nations deal with irreversible climate impacts.
* **Pay its $4 billion annual fair share** towards the global climate finance goal of $100 billion, with a significant portion going to Pacific Island nations.
* **Phase out fossil fuel uses and exports**, supporting the transition to renewable energy.
* **Provide accessible pathways for the relocation of Pacific Island peoples**, should they be forced to leave their homes due to climate change.

Australia’s existing development investments in the Pacific, while increasing, are insufficient to meet the growing needs. The ACFID stresses that climate finance must be “new and additional” to existing development assistance, not a replacement.

The upcoming UN Summit represents a crucial opportunity for Australia to demonstrate its commitment to the Pacific and to the global fight against climate change. The Pacific is demanding action, and Australia’s response will be closely watched.
