Thu Sep 19 07:08:33 UTC 2024: ## Messi Returns But Miami Held to Draw by Atlanta

**ATLANTA** – Lionel Messi, making his return from injury, came on as a substitute but was unable to lift Inter Miami to a victory, as Atlanta United earned a dramatic 2-2 draw Wednesday night. The tie keeps Miami atop the MLS standings, but a potential Supporters’ Shield win remains uncertain.

Messi, who scored two goals and provided an assist in his previous game, started on the bench as coach Gerardo Martino sought to manage his minutes following his recent injury. Despite a strong showing in the 61st minute, the Argentine star could not find the net in his limited time on the field.

Miami initially took the lead in the 29th minute when David Ruiz slotted in a deflected pass. The lead was short-lived, however, as Saba Lobjanidze leveled the score for Atlanta in the 56th minute with a header that slipped past Miami goalkeeper Drake Callender.

Leo Campana put Miami back in front with a deflected free kick in the 60th minute, but Atlanta drew even again in the 84th minute when Alexey Miranchuk unleashed a powerful shot from 20 yards out, finding the top corner of the net.

Both teams created numerous chances in the closing minutes, but neither could find a winner. The draw extends Miami’s lead at the top of the table to 12 points, but LA Galaxy, who played later Wednesday, could close the gap.

Messi showed flashes of his brilliance, including a back-heeled pass to Federico Redondo, but couldn’t find the decisive moment. He was met with frustration as his passes were intercepted and his attempts to find the net were unsuccessful.

The game drew a large crowd of 67,795 fans to Mercedes-Benz Stadium, who were eager to witness Messi’s return.

Miami will face New York City FC at Yankee Stadium this Saturday, while Atlanta will travel to New York Red Bulls for their next match.
