Wed Sep 18 02:03:04 UTC 2024: ## Pager Explosions Kill 16, Injure Thousands in Apparent Cyberattack

A series of coordinated pager explosions in Lebanon and Syria have left at least 16 people dead and over 3,000 injured. The explosions, which occurred simultaneously at 3:30pm local time, were reportedly preceded by the devices heating up dramatically.

Multiple sources suggest the pagers were used by Hezbollah members and that the explosions were a deliberate attack by Israel. However, The Wall Street Journal reports that the pagers were recently imported and that malware could be responsible for the deadly incidents. The publication alleges the pagers contained lithium-ion batteries, which may have been compromised by the malware.

Australian Shadow Cyber Security Minister James Paterson has described the event as a “very sophisticated and very patient attack.” He believes the novelty of the attack will prompt intelligence agencies worldwide to re-evaluate their security protocols and consider the possibility of using similar tactics against their enemies. “Probably every intelligence agency in the world is waking up this morning and thinking ‘how can we stop this happening to us? And if we chose to, how can we make this happen to our enemies?'” said Paterson to ABC News Channel.

While The Wall Street Journal attributes the explosions to malware, The Register suggests the pagers may have been intercepted and tampered with during their delivery route. The publication notes that if malware were used, the devices would have shown signs of overheating and sparking before exploding.

The incident highlights the potential dangers of connected devices and raises serious concerns about the increasing vulnerability of modern technology to cyberattacks. Investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the explosions and identify those responsible.
