Wed Sep 18 13:21:50 UTC 2024: ## AIFF Honors Indian Football Legend: Junior Girls’ National Championship Renamed in Dr. Talimeren Ao’s Name
**New Delhi, India** – The All India Football Federation (AIFF) announced a historic tribute to one of India’s pioneering footballers, Dr. Talimeren Ao. Effective from the 2025-26 season, the Junior Girls’ National Championship will be renamed the Dr. Talimeren Ao National Football Championship for Junior Girls.
This marks the first national recognition for Dr. Ao, who led the Indian men’s football team at the 1948 Summer Olympics. The AIFF aims to acknowledge his significant contributions to the sport and inspire future generations.
“Dr. Talimeren Ao is an inspiring figure, and his journey must be brought to life in today’s context,” said AIFF president Kalyan Chaubey. “The naming of our Junior Girls National Championship and a biography book will be a humble ode by the federation to our national hero.”
Dr. Ao’s remarkable career spans from his humble beginnings in Nagaland’s Changki village to becoming a prominent figure in Indian football. He was the captain of the Mohun Bagan team and even received offers from prestigious English clubs like Arsenal FC. However, he chose to pursue his medical studies and fulfill his father’s wish.
Dr. Ao later served as the director of Health Services in Nagaland, leaving a lasting legacy both on and off the field. The AIFF will also commission a biography to document his inspiring life story.
The Junior Girls’ National Championship, now in its 18th edition, has seen significant success from Manipur, with 11 titles and two runner-up finishes. This renaming ensures that Dr. Ao’s legacy continues to motivate young athletes for years to come.
