**GLASGOW, SCOTLAND -** Nineteen Afghan medical students, whose dreams were shattered by the Taliban’s ban on women attending university, are now pursuing their studies in Scotland. The women, who arrived in August, are grateful for the opportunity to continue their education and contribute to their communities.
The students’ journey to Scotland was made possible by the Linda Norgrove Foundation, named after a Scottish aid worker who was tragically killed in Afghanistan in 2010. The foundation has worked tirelessly to ensure these women can receive the education they deserve.
“Coming to Scotland, it changed everything. It has given me hope for a better future,” said Zahra Hussaini, a 20-year-old medical student who is now studying in Glasgow.
The students, who had often been confined to their homes following the Taliban’s restrictions, are now eligible for free tuition as Scottish students. They are pursuing their studies at various Scottish universities, including Glasgow, St Andrews, Dundee and Aberdeen.
“They didn’t allow me to get my specialisation in Afghanistan,” said Fariba Asifi, another student who is now studying in Glasgow. “Now I consider I am the luckiest person that I am here and I can continue my education.”
Despite their current circumstances, the women remain hopeful about the future of Afghanistan. They believe that one day, all women will have access to education and opportunities.
“It’s not a permanent situation, it’s temporary, it will change,” said Asifi. “And one day, I’m pretty sure we will see all girls, all ladies can do, can get education, get working and getting their fun. And we should be optimistic we will have a bright Afghanistan.”
The Linda Norgrove Foundation, which secured travel arrangements, visas, accommodation and English language support for the students, is providing these Afghan women with a chance at a brighter future, allowing them to pursue their dreams and contribute to their communities.
