**Srinagar/Jammu, Sep 18:** Jammu and Kashmir witnessed a record voter turnout of approximately 59% in the first phase of assembly elections held on Wednesday. This marks the highest turnout in the past seven Lok Sabha and assembly elections in the region, according to Chief Electoral Officer P K Pole. The elections, the first since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019, saw a peaceful first phase with voting taking place across the Kashmir Valley and Jammu region.
Out of the 90 seats, 24 were contested in the first phase – 16 in the Kashmir Valley and 8 in Jammu. Over 2.3 million voters were eligible to cast their ballots for 219 candidates, including 90 independents. Despite initial low turnout, the numbers steadily increased throughout the day, culminating in a record-breaking 59% participation.
Security forces ensured a smooth and peaceful voting process, with only minor incidents of clashes between political workers reported in certain areas.
**Political Leaders Encourage Voter Participation:**
Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged citizens to participate in the “festival of democracy,” particularly encouraging young and first-time voters. Union Home Minister Amit Shah highlighted the importance of a strong turnout to elect a government focused on youth education, employment, and women’s empowerment.
Lt Governor Manoj Sinha also appealed to people, especially the youth and women, to exercise their democratic rights. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge emphasized the significance of participation in safeguarding the rights of the people.
Rahul Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, urged voters to support the INDIA bloc and reclaim their rights. Omar Abdullah, National Conference leader, acknowledged the significant changes in Jammu and Kashmir since 2019 and stressed the importance of these elections.
**The Road Ahead:**
The next two phases of elections are scheduled for September 25 and October 1, with the counting of votes set for October 8. The outcome of these elections will shape the political landscape of Jammu and Kashmir and its future.
