**St. John’s, NL** – A 16-year-old boy was arrested and charged with bringing weapons to Waterford Valley High School on Monday, prompting the Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers’ Association (NLTA) to call for increased support and resources for teachers and students.
The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) responded to the school after the student, who was not supposed to be on school grounds, refused to leave. Police found weapons, including a bladed weapon and a defensive spray, after removing the student from the school.
The NLTA President, Trent Langdon, expressed deep concern about the incident, describing it as “very alarming” and “disturbing”. He highlighted this incident as an example of the growing trend of violence and threats in schools that teachers are facing.
Langdon revealed that teachers are dealing with an average of 29 violent incidents in schools every day. The NLTA has been advocating for greater support for teachers, including a dedicated support hub in schools with professionals like social workers and public health nurses.
The incident echoes a similar attack in March 2023 where a student was severely injured outside Prince of Wales Collegiate.
Langdon stressed the need for a multi-faceted approach to address the issue, emphasizing the importance of preventative measures and community support for students both inside and outside of school.
The Department of Education is taking disciplinary action against the student, while the RNC continues its investigation. The NLTA is urging the government to take action and provide the necessary resources to ensure the safety and well-being of teachers and students in Newfoundland and Labrador schools.
