Egyptian satirist Bassem Youssef has condemned Israel after a series of explosions in Lebanon and Syria, killing nine and injuring thousands, were allegedly caused by explosives planted in pagers. The explosions, which primarily affected Hezbollah members, have been widely attributed to Israeli intelligence agency Mossad.
Youssef, a vocal supporter of Palestine, took to Twitter to express his outrage, stating that “at the whims of one country, everyday devices like my phone, my children’s tablets or even their security devices could become time bombs.” He criticized the lack of media coverage, questioning why such a significant event wasn’t being discussed by politicians or late-night shows.
“You win Israel,” Youssef wrote. “Not a single politician or late night show talks about this? None of that worth the news? Nothing ‘funny’ can come out of it? The whole country is truly a hostage. The whole world is.”
The explosions, which injured nearly 3,000 people in Lebanon alone, have been condemned by Hezbollah. The Iran-backed Lebanese group called it the biggest security breach they have faced in nearly a year of war with Israel and vowed retaliation.
This isn’t the first time Youssef has spoken out against Israel. Earlier this year, he criticized Israel’s ongoing war against Hamas in Gaza, calling it a “typical narcissist” and accusing Israel of creating an “alternative reality” that allows people to be indifferent to the suffering of Palestinian civilians.
His witty response to British TV presenter Piers Morgan’s question about the Palestinians’ “resilience” went viral, with Youssef jokingly stating that he’s “married to one” and has “tried many times” to kill her, but is always stopped by her using their children as human shields.
Youssef’s latest condemnation of Israel follows a pattern of outspoken criticism from the Egyptian satirist, highlighting his unwavering support for Palestine and his disapproval of Israel’s actions in the region.
