New York, NY – David Handelman, a prolific writer who transitioned from print journalism to television, passed away on August 15th at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. He was 63. Handelman’s death was attributed to complications from Waldenström’s macroglobulinemia, a rare blood cancer.
Handelman, known for his sharp wit and insightful writing, left a lasting mark on the television landscape. He worked on numerous iconic shows including “Sports Night,” “The West Wing,” “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip,” and “The Newsroom,” all created by Aaron Sorkin. He also contributed to several other series like “Love Monkey,” “One Tree Hill,” “Nashville,” and “Rogue.”
Prior to his television success, Handelman was a staff writer at Rolling Stone, covering a wide range of subjects from music icons like the Beastie Boys and Talking Heads to social activist groups like ACT UP. He later served as arts editor for Vogue and penned articles for prominent publications including The New York Times, New York Magazine, GQ, and Details.
His diverse background in journalism informed his writing for television, particularly his collaborations with Aaron Sorkin. Handelman’s experience as a journalist infused several plotlines and details into Sorkin’s shows, bringing a layer of realism to the fictional world.
Handelman is survived by his wife, Syd Sidner; his daughters, Helen and Nancy; and his brothers, Dan and Matt. His life was celebrated on Saturday at a service in New York City, attended by over 400 people, including numerous industry professionals.
