Wed Sep 18 08:52:24 UTC 2024: ## Young CA Dies After Alleged Overwork at EY India, Sparking Concerns Over Toxic Work Culture

Pune, India – Anna Sebastian Perayil, a newly hired Chartered Accountant (CA) at EY India, passed away nearly four months after joining the company, sparking concerns about a potentially toxic work culture. Her mother, Anita Augustine, alleges that Perayil was overwhelmed by an excessive workload, leading to physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion.

According to Augustine, Perayil, a high-achieving student who had excelled in her studies, began experiencing anxiety, sleeplessness, and stress soon after joining EY. She was reportedly put under immense pressure to meet unreasonable expectations from her superiors.

Augustine further revealed that Perayil suffered from chest pain, a consequence of her grueling work schedule. Despite experiencing health issues, Perayil continued to work long hours, even on her convocation day, due to the pressure she felt to excel in her role.

In a letter addressed to Rajiv Memani, Chairman of EY India, Augustine expresses disappointment that no one from EY attended Perayil’s funeral or reached out to the family in the aftermath of the tragedy. She claims that attempts to contact Perayil’s superiors at the company went unanswered.

These allegations have prompted several industry professionals to speak out against EY India’s alleged toxic work culture. While LiveMint could not independently verify the claims, they have reached out to EY for comment and are awaiting a response.

Perayil’s tragic passing raises serious concerns about the potential for overwork and workplace stress to have detrimental effects on employee well-being. This incident highlights the need for organizations to prioritize employee health and create a supportive work environment that fosters a healthy balance between work and personal life.
