**Katherine, NT:** A woman is fighting for her life after an alleged domestic violence attack outside a Katherine shopping centre on Monday evening.
Police have arrested a 49-year-old man in connection with the incident, which involved an edged weapon. The victim, also 49 years old, was rushed to Katherine Hospital in critical condition and later airlifted to Royal Darwin Hospital via Care Flight.
Witnesses reported seeing the attack, which occurred in a busy area frequented by families and children. One eyewitness described seeing the man attack the woman with a knife, causing injuries to her hands and wrists.
CCTV footage obtained by the ABC shows the woman lying on the footpath after the attack, drawing the attention of a passerby at 5:18pm. Police arrived at 5:28pm and administered first aid.
The scene of the alleged assault has been cordoned off by police as they continue their investigation. Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
NT Health is currently checking permission from the woman’s family before providing further updates on her condition, in line with privacy laws.
