Wed Sep 18 11:53:10 UTC 2024: ## New Covid-19 Variant XEC Spreading Rapidly Across Globe

A new Covid-19 variant, XEC, is rapidly spreading across the globe, raising concerns among scientists. The variant, a sublineage of Omicron, was first identified in Germany in June and has since been detected in at least 27 countries including the UK, US, Denmark, and China.

The XEC variant is considered “more contagious” than previous strains and has been spreading quickly across Europe, with experts predicting it could soon become the dominant strain.

Slovenia experienced high infection rates with XEC in August, with over 10% of Covid case samples containing the variant. Data analyst Mike Honey notes the strong growth of XEC in Denmark and Germany.

While the symptoms of XEC are believed to be similar to those of previous Omicron subvariants, including fever, aches, tiredness, cough, and sore throat, the decrease in routine testing makes it difficult to assess the current level of Covid circulation.

Despite concerns, experts emphasize that staying up-to-date with Covid-19 vaccinations and booster shots provides sufficient protection against severe illness and hospitalization. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also advises maintaining good hygiene and cleaner air.

Researchers are closely monitoring the XEC variant to better understand its symptoms and potential impact on public health.
