**New Delhi, India:** Atishi, a 43-year-old former academic, has been appointed as Delhi’s chief minister-designate, marking a remarkable ascent to the pinnacle of the national capital’s political scene. Atishi’s journey began 11 years ago when she left academia to join the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), a fledgling political outfit aiming to disrupt Delhi’s electoral landscape.
Starting as a volunteer in the party’s humble two-room office, Atishi’s political career has experienced a dramatic trajectory. While she has emphasized her role as a placeholder until the next elections, with Kejriwal returning as CM if AAP wins another term, her rise has coincided with a turbulent period for the party. Over the past two years, nearly all of AAP’s senior leaders, including Kejriwal and former Deputy CM Manish Sisodia, were incarcerated on various charges. This propelled Atishi to a senior position, filling the void left by incarcerated leaders.
Atishi was inducted into the state government in March 2023, assuming responsibility for over 12 ministries including education, public works, power, and finance. During the incarcerations of Sisodia and Kejriwal, she emerged as the public face of the Delhi government.
Born Atishi Singh, she was raised in a leftist family and studied at prestigious institutions like St. Stephen’s College and Oxford University. After her studies, she dedicated seven years to rural development in Madhya Pradesh, working on organic farming and progressive education systems.
Atishi’s association with the AAP began during the India Against Corruption movement led by Anna Hazare, attracted by Kejriwal’s vision of a corruption-free government and focus on education reform. She joined the party in 2013, quickly becoming a key member in formulating the AAP manifesto for the 2013 Delhi elections.
Atishi, known for her policy interventions, spearheaded significant changes in Delhi’s government schools, playing a pivotal role in improving infrastructure and educational standards. Her initiatives like “Mission Buniyaad” and “Happiness Curriculum” have earned her accolades.
Despite a setback in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Atishi won the Kalkaji assembly seat in 2020. Her influence within the Delhi government strengthened after Sisodia’s arrest, and she became increasingly vocal about issues like the water crisis, even undertaking a hunger strike that led to her hospitalization.
Her trust and closeness to Kejriwal were evident when he recommended her as the flag-hoister for Delhi’s Independence Day celebrations, a request declined by the Lieutenant Governor.
Atishi’s elevation to chief minister-designate signifies her standing as a trusted leader within the AAP and her significant contribution to the party’s vision for Delhi. Her journey is a testament to her dedication, hard work, and commitment to public service. While her time as chief minister may be temporary, her influence within the party and the Delhi government is likely to remain substantial.
