Wed Sep 18 02:07:47 UTC 2024: ## Tamil Nadu Faces Unexpected Power Surge Amidst Unusual September Heat

**Chennai:** Tamil Nadu is experiencing a sudden spike in power demand, driven by unusually high temperatures this September, according to the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco). Power consumption has increased by over 30% this month, with demand hitting 17,974 MW by mid-September, a significant jump from the 13,709 MW recorded on September 1st.

This surge is particularly unexpected as power demand typically stabilizes between June and September. The state’s record power demand of 20,830 MW was recorded in May during peak summer months.

Despite the unexpected increase, Tangedco has managed to maintain uninterrupted power supply to its 3.5 crore consumers. This has been achieved through a combination of wind power generation, which is currently favorable, and electricity sourced from the central government.

Tangedco is currently receiving around 100 million units (MUs) daily from the central government and nearly 80 MUs from wind energy. This has allowed the company to reduce reliance on coal-based thermal power stations, with only 50-60% of their capacity currently being utilized.

Solar power generation has also seen a boost, generating 6,329 MW on Monday, contributing significantly to meeting the rising demand.

While Tangedco acknowledges the growing demand, they have assured the public that there will be no power cuts, as they are fully prepared to meet the state’s electricity needs.
