**New Delhi, India -** In a significant move aimed at streamlining elections and bolstering national unity, the Indian Union Cabinet has approved the “One Nation, One Election” proposal. This proposal, spearheaded by a high-level committee led by former President Ram Nath Kovind, aims to synchronize national (Lok Sabha) and state (Assembly) elections, along with local body elections.
The proposal, unanimously approved by the Cabinet, will be implemented in two phases:
**Phase 1:** Simultaneous Lok Sabha and Assembly elections will be held.
**Phase 2:** Local body elections, including Gram Panchayat, Block, Zila Panchayat, municipality, and municipal committees or corporations, will be conducted within 100 days following the first phase.
The “One Nation, One Election” concept has garnered support from a diverse range of political parties, who see it as a way to strengthen democracy and foster national unity. The Kovind-led committee’s report, encompassing an extensive 18,626 pages, highlights the numerous benefits of simultaneous elections, including:
* **Enhanced Policy Certainty:** Frequent elections create an atmosphere of uncertainty, hampering policy decisions. Simultaneous elections would provide a stable political landscape, allowing for more effective policymaking.
* **Increased Voter Turnout:** A single election cycle would reduce voter fatigue and encourage higher participation.
* **Economic and Social Harmony:** Intermittent elections can negatively impact economic growth, public spending, and social harmony. Simultaneous elections aim to address these issues.
The proposal, however, faces challenges, requiring amendments to the Constitution and consensus from various political stakeholders. The report will now be presented to Parliament for consideration and approval from both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha before becoming law.
