**New Delhi, India** – The Indian Cabinet on Wednesday approved the report of a committee led by former President Ram Nath Kovind recommending a framework for “one nation, one election,” a proposal that aims to synchronize national and state elections.
The report, which was submitted to the government earlier this year, found widespread support for the idea, with the Cabinet unanimously approving its recommendations. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the approval, stating that the panel’s recommendations would be discussed across India. He added that an implementation group would be formed to take forward the proposal, aiming to achieve consensus in the coming months.
The proposal has sparked controversy, with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) expressing enthusiasm and several opposition parties raising concerns. While BJP’s ally, Janata Dal (United), indicated support, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge criticized the idea as impractical and a distraction tactic. Trinamool Congress lawmaker Derek O’Brien called the move a “cheap stunt” by the BJP.
The Kovind panel’s report recommends amending the Constitution to introduce the concepts of full and unexpired terms, allowing simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha and all state assemblies. The panel also proposes synchronizing local body elections within 100 days of the national and state elections.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has repeatedly advocated for “one nation, one election,” welcomed the Cabinet’s decision. He has argued that frequent elections hinder national progress and divert resources from development initiatives.
The opposition’s concerns center around the potential for disruption in state governance and the possibility of giving the ruling BJP an unfair advantage in elections. The debate over “one nation, one election” is likely to continue, with both sides seeking to build consensus and ensure the proposal’s implementation aligns with democratic principles.
