Tue Sep 17 05:50:33 UTC 2024: ## UK Offshore Oil and Gas Industry Hits Emission Target Four Years Early

**Aberdeen, UK** – The UK’s offshore oil and gas industry has achieved its 2027 target for cutting emissions four years ahead of schedule, according to a report released by Offshore Energies UK (OEUK). This milestone was reached through increased efficiency in power systems, reduced flaring and venting, and a commitment to sustainable practices.

Between 2018 and 2023, companies reduced their pollution by more than 25%, exceeding the original pledge set out in the North Sea Transition Deal. Furthermore, methane emissions were halved, achieving the target seven years early.

“Oil and gas will remain essential for decades to come,” said Mark Wilson, OEUK’s director of health, safety, environment and operations. “It is better from all points of view — financial, environmental and social — that energy comes from our own homegrown North Sea supplies.”

The news comes as the UK government is pushing for a transition to renewable energy sources, aiming for net zero emissions by 2050. While the oil and gas industry still accounts for 3.5% of national emissions, the report suggests a continued commitment to reducing its environmental impact.

Looking ahead, the report predicts a “steep” decline in emissions from upstream oil and gas beyond 2030, driven by decreasing production, reduced flaring and venting, and the construction of more efficient installations. However, the industry is facing challenges, with production of primary oil falling to an all-time low in 2022, and gas production reaching the second-lowest level on record.

OEUK warns that production could halve in six years without “supportive fiscal and regulatory policy” to encourage investment in the North Sea. The report highlights the potential for the North Sea to unlock the equivalent of 13.5 billion barrels of domestic oil and gas.

The report’s findings are expected to be discussed at a major policy speech delivered by Foreign Secretary David Lammy, focusing on accelerating the global deployment of renewables and unlocking more climate finance. The UK’s success in reducing emissions from the offshore oil and gas sector offers a positive example of how the industry can contribute to a cleaner energy future.
