Wed Sep 18 07:13:10 UTC 2024: ## Trump Slams India’s Trade Practices, Praises Modi Ahead of US Visit
Former US President Donald Trump has criticized India’s trade policies, calling the country a “big abuser” of import tariffs, while praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “fantastic” leader. Speaking at a town hall meeting in Flint, Michigan, Trump revealed he will be meeting with Modi next week during the Prime Minister’s three-day visit to the US.
Trump highlighted India’s high tariffs on imports, stating that “India is tough… but China is the toughest.” He emphasized the need for reciprocal trade policies, arguing that the US should impose the same tariffs on countries that charge high tariffs on American goods. “Either everything will balance out, leading to free trade again, or we’ll bring in a lot of revenue,” he said.
Modi’s visit to the US, scheduled from September 21 to 23, will include attending the annual Quad Summit hosted by US President Joe Biden in Delaware. He will also address the ‘Summit of the Future’ at the United Nations General Assembly and meet with the Indian community in New York.
This will be the first meeting between Modi and Trump since the former president’s departure from office. Their previous meeting in February 2020 was hailed as a “path-breaking moment” in US-India relations.
Trump’s comments on India’s trade practices come amidst ongoing discussions about the need for fairer trade agreements between the two countries. It remains to be seen how this issue will be addressed during Modi’s visit and whether Trump’s criticism will impact the bilateral relationship.
