Tue Sep 17 06:35:41 UTC 2024: ## TikTok Fitness Fads: Harmful Content and Lack of Credentials Raise Concerns

**Adelaide, Australia** – A new study from Flinders University has exposed the potentially dangerous health information being shared by fitness influencers on TikTok. Researchers analyzed 200 videos, finding that 60% contained incorrect or harmful advice, often promoting unrealistic body ideals and encouraging disordered eating behaviours.

The study, published in the journal “Social Media + Society,” highlights the alarming trend of unqualified individuals providing fitness guidance online. “Ninety-five percent of the people posting videos didn’t have any relevant nutrition or fitness credentials,” stated Samantha Pryde, lead author of the study.

The research found that the majority of videos perpetuated negative messages, including body shaming, sexualization, and the promotion of extreme dieting. The ideal body type portrayed was often thin for women and muscular and lean for men. This emphasis on unrealistic body ideals has the potential to negatively impact viewers’ mental and physical health.

“Men and women exposed to this content are more likely to develop disordered eating behaviours,” said Pryde. “The videos are often promoting an idealized view of body types, causing negative body image issues, particularly among young women.”

The study underscores the need for stricter regulations on influencer advertising, with experts calling for collaboration between public health organizations and fitness influencers to ensure the promotion of evidence-based information.

The federal government’s proposed legislation banning children under 16 from social media platforms is a step in the right direction, but Pryde warns that even older users remain susceptible to harmful content.

The study emphasizes the importance of verifying the credentials of anyone offering health and fitness advice online. “Influencer popularity shouldn’t overshadow the accuracy and safety of the information they share,” said professor Eva Kemps, co-author of the study.

As social media continues to grow, it is crucial to be discerning about the information we consume. Experts urge viewers to be critical of the content they encounter and to seek guidance from qualified professionals for their health and fitness goals.
