**Ahmedabad, India:** Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday launched a scathing attack on the opposition, accusing them of “defaming India” and engaging in “appeasement politics.” Speaking at a rally in Ahmedabad, Modi, without naming Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, criticized certain individuals for their remarks abroad and their alleged attempts to revive Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir.
The Prime Minister’s comments come amidst a political row sparked by Gandhi’s statements in the US, where he alleged the Lok Sabha elections were rigged and that the Election Commission was biased. The BJP has accused Gandhi of making “anti-reservation” remarks and termed his comments “treason.”
Modi also highlighted the upcoming first phase of elections in Jammu and Kashmir, set to take place today in 24 Assembly constituencies. Security in Srinagar has been beefed up ahead of the Prime Minister’s election rally in the city.
Meanwhile, the Congress has appointed Charanjit Channi and Mukesh Agnihotri as observers for the J&K polls. The party is facing a tough battle against the BJP, which has accused the Abdullahs, the prominent political family in J&K, of promoting a “Jihadi agenda.”
Modi’s speech in Ahmedabad also focused on the development agenda of his government, stating that he has been focused on delivering on promises despite facing criticism and mockery from the opposition. He further announced the release of the first installment of Rs 2,044 crore to 5.11 lakh beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G) housing scheme.
